A ROSE OIL RECIPE for the CUSP OF FALL
Yesterday I sat under the sun
I was drenched in sweat from the new angle of the autumn sun.
Today, my body told me to wear pants and I complied, not knowing why. By afternoon, the wind had picked up and the sweat of yesterday was replaced by goosebumps!
In Ayurveda this space of overlap is called a sandhi. It’s the way fall overlaps on summer, creating an almost third experience. It has its unique smell, its unique feel.
I always try to neglect the fact that summer is fading. I love my garden. I love falling asleep on my deck! I really don’t love 6 months of Winnipeg winter.
Gardening has helped me with the dance of the seasons though. Each month has its own flowers and harvest!
We are shifting between the fire season of summer to the drying, windy season of fall.
This means we need moisture for our skin, joints and hair. This is the season to use beautiful massage oils.
I like to use rose oil during this season. Roses are so softening to the skin. They carry so much solar energy, and they’re also cooling and softening for rough skin. Roses are also very healing for the heart chakra. They help unravel grief, soften anger and bring joy and gratitude into the emotional body.
EASY ROSE OIL RECIPE
If you grow roses, harvest their petals. If not, you can buy rose petals from florists to make your oil.

Pack a large jar half way with petals.
Pour olive or avocado oil to fill the jar almost to the top.
Leave a ½ inch space empty.
Put the lid on the jar.
Place the jar in an insta pot on steam for 15 minutes.
This creates such a soft decorated oil.
Strain the oil and remove petals to prevent mould
Label with the date and type of oil.
This can be done with any herbs or flowers that are non toxic to skin.
You now have a base oil you can use for daily self massage.
The fragrance isn’t strong, but definitely rosy!
When you want to switch things up, take out a few ounces of this base oil and mix in essential oils of your liking.
Lavender is soothing
Lemon balm is relaxing
Eucalyptus is great for opening airways or soothing joint pain
Ylang ylang is both grounding and sensual
The possibilities are endless. I love to apply my rose oil to my entire body, including my face. I do so while thank my body for being the beautiful vessel that enables me to experience so much joy and growth.
I’d love to hear if you make this oil and would love to hear some of your favourite fragrance combinations!
Happy September!
